the new year begins...

In the last couple of years, instead of making new year resolutions, I've been picking a word for the year...a word that would help guide me and provide a framework...giving me a "theme" if you would imagine, that pulls together one's activity for 12 months.

I've found that its rather helpful...last year's word was simplify...and in a very physical sense, that is exactly what happened...

I went on a purging frenzy and unloaded a lot of extra stuff...which probably helped to unload some mental clutter as well in the process.

This year, when I thought about a word, it was a struggle...should it be this...or maybe that...or have you considered...it was becoming torturous...until it became clear...

my word needed to be...FOCUS

I need to focus on what I am doing in the next year...in what direction am I going.  I need to focus on how I spend my time, my energy, my resources - mentally, physically, artistically.  I don't want to just go with the flow...I want to live intentionally.

I need to eliminate distractions that flit across my attention span, like gnats that pester you in summer, seemingly buzzing around but impossible to quell.

This doesn't mean that life will be rigid...rather I want to make conscious decisions, being open to spontaneity but with one eye on the horizon...not bobbing around in the waves, subject to any ripple that washes over me.

It is my hope, with a little more concentrated effort, I'll be blogging on a more regular basis...as soon as I fine tune my writing focus...I hope you'll stay tuned...

Do you have a word for the year? I'd love to hear...comment below...
