An original mixed media collage that combines vintage materials with found objects tells a unique story. Weaving texture and pattern with color and tone lends a contemporary voice to these recycled elements. The traditional strip quilt pattern is turned on its head…the strips are a combination of vintage photos of women, often with family members as well as snippets of cooking recipes, prescription chits, old wallpaper scraps and handwritten letters. The squares of the quilt don’t quite line up symmetrically, a nod to the fact that most women’s life don’t play out in a organized fashion. The clock faces, gears, hands and springs further illustrate that life often follows its own course over time. All of the elements in the composition are original pieces, some dating to the early 1920’s.
